Press Release

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD FOR CCTV Date Published: 16/07/2010 Expires: 16/08/2010

This Press Release has expired.

The Isle of Wight Council's Community Safety Services has achieved a top environmental accreditation for its CCTV service.

Following an assessment by an independent body, the council has been awarded ISO 14001 certification, an internationally recognised accreditation acknowledging an organisation's commitment to implementing, maintaining and improving environmental practices within the workplace.

When the CCTV control room was upgraded earlier this year, it provided an ideal opportunity for the team to incorporate eco-features and adopt environmental management practices. Special lighting has been fitted, along with a strict recycling regime for lighting, paper, card, plastics and printer cartridges.

The ISO 14001 certification has only been achieved by less than one per cent of UK businesses, demonstrating the council's commitment to embracing environmental practices.

Cllr Barry Abraham, Isle of Wight Council Cabinet Member for Fire and Community Safety said: "I am delighted the CCTV Service has achieved ISO 14001 accreditation; the team has worked extremely hard to put policies in place to ensure the CCTV service is operating to the highest environmental standards."

Simon Dennis, Isle of Wight Council Community Safety Services Operations Manager said: "We were inspired to make these changes to the control room after a visit from Dame Ellen MacArthur who after finding out about the planned upgrade asked what eco-features would be incorporated. We are delighted to have integrated environmental practices, which support the Eco Island vision, into the day-to-day running of the control room and are pleased that it has been recognised by a national body."

Notes for editors

The ISO assessment was undertaken by QMS International Ltd, an international organisation specialising in assessment and certification.

ISO 14001 was first published in 1996 and specifies the actual requirements for an environmental management system.
