The Isle of Wight History website is a resource created to bring the wealth of local historic and cultural information available within the archives of the Isle of Wight Council’s Museums Service and the County Record Office together in one place, online.
Up until now people have been unaware of the full range of resources available because 90% of these invaluable documents are in paper format and have been locked away in storage. The Isle of Wight History website aims to transform the current standpoint by making documents, artifacts, maps, plans and photographic details of collections available for use via the internet; a significant breakthrough for students, tourists and ex-patriot Islanders all over the world.
Using the information on the Isle of Wight History website, children and adults are able to discover the Island’s history and heritage, trace their family origins and subjects of personal interest whilst participating in a range of learning activities.
The website makes it easy to search for documents and artifacts via the search facility within its expandable database, to which more information is being added on a regular basis.
It goes without saying that to catalogue the amount of material available for the whole island is a huge task which will require considerable work and time, therefore the initial stages of this project focus on the geographical area of East Cowes. However Isle of Wight Council is committed to the growth of this site and it is hoped that in future years it will become a valuable resource for the entire population of the Isle of Wight.
