I-Spy
The Island’s countryside and it’s thousands of gardens look particularly lovely at this time of year – it is really tempting to go out for a healthy walk, or relax in your own back garden. Make the most of your time outdoors with a book from Freshwater Library. We have put together a collection of books to help you spot birds , trees and wild flowers, as well as fossils if you go down to the beach. So make the most of summer on the Isle of Wight, and see what you can spy.

War
It is an unfortunate fact of life that war seems to be ever-present in the worlds. Find out about how warfare has changed over the centuries, and read people’s experiences of being caught up in war, in Freshwater Library’s new book display “War through the ages”. The collection features many accounts of the First and Second World Wars, as well as other conflicts through history. See also how the novelists, both classic and modern tell their stories through an author’s eyes.

Out and about with the Library Friends

The staff at Freshwater Library are looking for volunteers to take the library toys out this summer. Pooh bear and Peter Rabbit have been to the beach at Ventnor already this year and the Wild Thing has been to Scotland and Ireland. If you would like to take one of our book animals out with you call into the library. The staff will be pleased to see you and while you are there you can see the photos and pick up a book so that you can read the toys a story!

Questseekers – Summer Holidays

Look out for Quest Seekers, the exciting new children’s reading challenge over the summer holidays, in which children across the Isle of Wight are invited to embark on a fantastical adventure and become a Questseeker. As the summer progresses, children attempt a series of imaginary quests, and earn prizes and rewards along the way. All they have to do to achieve the quest is to read books. Children who read six library books over the summer holidays have completed the quest, and are rewarded with a medal and a certificate.

The theme this year is all about the power of the imagination. It will take young readers into a mysterious and wondrous land where they can discover the joy of reading and nurture a life-long love affair with books. It also promotes the library as a place of wonder and excitement, where librarians can offer children invaluable advice and guidance to help them through their quest. For more information, activities, author blogs and games, please see their website: http://www.questseekers.org.uk
