Maintenance of access

The Isle of Wight Council is under no obligation to repair or maintain the Property.  The home/business is soley responsible for the maintenance of the access.

To be granted an Access Licence, the home/business owner must ensure that the access way is maintained to an acceptable standard and free from obstruction to ensure it is Health and Safety compliant. An initial inspection of the access will be undertaken and if  the access is not suitable to use the Council may not authorise its use or grant an Access License.

Validity of license

If an Access Licence is granted it will run for a maximum of 3 years from the date of issue and will then be subject to a rent review.


The Licence is personal to the owner and is not transferable, therefore, it will terminate on completion of sale of the home/business. 

Please note: If you are selling your home or business and an access licensed has been granted, as the owner (Licensee)  you must notify the Isle of Wight Council within one month following the sale. Please read the information on the web page titled 'Cancel a License Agreement'.
