Answer: You can apply online via the related link, or can obtain an application pack from the Licensing Section on (01983) 823160.

The fee varies considerably depending on the type of goods sold and the amount of time for which a consent is required. The online form and application pack give details of all the fees applicable.

Conditions will be attached to the Consent as applicable, and will relate to matters such as setting up/taking down times, trading times, disposal of litter, etc. A full list of conditions is available from the Licensing Section on (01983) 823159 and will also shortly be available to download.

Answer: All streets on the Isle of Wight are designated as 'Consent Streets', which means that in order to trade in any of them, you must first obtain a Street Trading Consent from the Council, by contacting Licensing on 01983 823159.

Question: Are there any exemptions from the need to obtain a Street Trading Consent?

Answer: Some types of trade are exempt from the need to obtain a Consent. These include;
a) Pedlars trading under the authority of a Pedlars Certificate
b) Certain news vendors
c) Trade carried out in the street adjoining a shop provided it is part of that shop's business and that it does not obstruct the highway or pavement.

Question: I wish to trade as a Pedlar (someone who keeps on the move except to stop to make a sale). How do I get a certificate for this?

Answer: On the Isle of Wight you can obtain a Pedlars Certificate in person from Newport Police Station, High Street, Newport. There is a fee payable.
