Borrowing E-books from the Library Service
E-books are electronic versions of the printed book.
The Isle of Wight Library Service does not currently subscribe to any of the commercial e-book suppliers. This is because there is no "ideal" model for libraries to lend e-books to its members, partly because of publishers' fear that it could become too easy for people to borrow books for free. The government commissioned an independent review into the e-lending in public libraries (PDF) which was published in March 2013 by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport.
We will continue to monitor the situation and hope to subscribe to an e-book lending service when the industry has established a suitable model.
