Question: Who is responsible for maintaining roadside ditches?

Answer: Roadside ditches are the responsibility of the adjacent landowner and therefore should be maintained regularly to avoid road surface water draining onto the highway.

It is an offence to allow mud, stones, soil or other material to be carried, or washed onto the highway.

Answer: Domestic sewer and drainage problems are dealt with by the Housing Department, tel 823040. They can offer advice to customers and also enforce the laws covering drainage and sewers.
Sewerage pipes and manhole covers in the highway are usually controlled by Southern Water Tel. 0845 2720845.
