Holidays, play and leisure

Many disabled children and young people say that leisure and play – after school, in the holidays and at weekends – is the most important missing element in their lives. Parents strive to make opportunities for these but often find many unnecessary barriers, including a basic lack of information about what’s available.

A guide has been written which provides some information about what play, leisure, and short breaks options and where to find more information. It also has information about arranging holidays for disabled children and details of organisations which provide grants for these types of activities. To view the guide click here (PDF, 989.24 KB, 36 pages).

Public Health Hampshire, working with Children’s Services and Energise Me, has developed a HIOW Physical Activities Strategy to 2021.

This is aimed at children, young people and adults and aims to increase overall levels of physical activity to support health and wellbeing. Its priorities are;

  • Accelerate the reduction of inactivity amongst adults
  • Reverse the rising trend of inactivity amongst females
  • Narrow the gap in levels of inactivity between those adults with (or at risk of) a long-term health condition and those without
  • Improve levels of physical activity among children and young people
