Museums and Schools Programme

Creating a feast at Newport Roman Villa

Update June 2020

A partnership of museums across the Island has received funding for a third year of their successful and popular Museums and Schools Programme. A grant of just over £62,000 has been made available with money from the Department for Education administered by Arts Council England. It will be used to enhance links between schools and a consortium of seven Island museums and cultural organisations, led this year by the Isle of Wight Council’s Heritage Service. The other partners are Brading Roman Villa, Carisbrooke Castle Museum, the Classic Boat Museum, Dimbola Museum and Art Gallery, the Shipwreck Centre and the Cultural Education Partnership.

The Museums and Schools programme aims to offer quality engagement connecting museums and local schoolchildren and targeting areas with high levels of deprivation. Traditionally this has meant encouraging children into our museums. Exciting workshops have been delivered over the past two years across all the museum sites and have been extremely well received. To date more than 5,500 children have benefitted from the scheme.

Museums and Schools and Covid -19

The current Covid-19 crisis may challenge schools visiting our partner museum sites in 2020/21. We are currently consulting teachers to see how we can assist with bringing our museums and collections to schools so pupils can still have a first-class experience. We will be investigating remote tours, virtual workshops, collection centred activities and living history events which can be completed within a classroom setting or at our museum sites.

If teachers would like to find out more or receive assistance in planning resources then please get in touch with Richard Smout - richard.smout@iow.gov.uk
