Question: What instruments are available for tuition?

Answer: Strings – Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Electric Bass
Woodwind – Flute, Piccolo, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon
Brass – Trumpet, Cornet, Trombone, Tuba, French Horn, Tenor Horn
Others – Percussion, Keyboard, Recorder, Guitar, Electric Guitar

The IW Music Service offers free tuition (and free instrument hire) for the first year
of lessons on viola, cello and double bass (all schools) and on oboe, bassoon,
trombone, tuba, euphonium and French horn in middle and high schools.

Question: How many lessons do instrumental pupils receive?

Answer: The IW Music Service guarantees a minimum of 30 visits in a school year for instrumental lessons, although many pupils in fact receive rather more than this. Parents need to be aware though that staff are involved in workshops, concerts and examinations at certain times of the year and that some lessons may not be available as a result.

Question: Can I apply for help towards the cost of buying an instrument?

Answer: Through the IW Music Service Musical Instrument Assisted Purchase Scheme, pupils receiving tuition in maintained schools are able to purchase instruments free of VAT. To qualify for this scheme pupils must be studying the instrument in school within the IWSM scheme and use the instrument in school during normal school hours at least once a week. Enquiries/applications, in the first instance, should be made via the instrumental teacher at school. Alternatively, general information can be obtained from the Music Service office on 556865.

Question: Does the Music Service have a scheme to help provide specialist tuition for gifted and talented pupils?

Answer: Support is available for students from families with low incomes subject to successful auditions and Further information/application forms available either via the instrumental teacher at school.

Question: Is additional financial help available towards the cost of school instrumental lessons?

Answer: Gifted pupils from low income families may apply for Bursaries partly supporting tuition costs or instrument purchase. Further information/applications should be made via the instrumental teacher. Please be aware that applicants will be required to undertake an audition as part of the process.

Question: Is it possible to hire instruments?

Answer: A limited number of instruments are available for hire (subject to consultation with music staff) and include :

Violin, Viola, Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Cornet, Saxophone, Tenor Horn, Trombone, Cello, Double Bass, Euphonium, Oboe, French Horn, Tuba, Bassoon

The cost is £20 per term depending upon the instrument (in cases of financial hardship the charge may be adjusted).

Applications for hire of musical instruments and enquiries regarding their availability should be made via the instrumental teacher at school.
