What is an apprenticeship

Apprenticeships are designed to be an opportunity for individuals to combine practical training in a job with study. 

As an apprentice you’ll be:

  • Based in a workplace so that you can train to gain the skills in the occupation or service area of your choice.
  • Offered an apprenticeship agreement, which means you will learn and gain a qualification at a specific level over a given time.
  • Earning a wage and get holiday pay.

 

Myth buster: Apprenticeships are not meant to be an opportunity to employ somebody cheaply. An apprenticeship is a genuine opportunity for somebody to join the council to gain skills, knowledge and experience and achieve a qualification to help their employability for the future.

What apprentices can earn

Current rates

The Isle of Wight Council has agreed the following rates of pay for apprentices, with effect from 1 April 2019.

 

Lower level apprenticeships, levels 1 to 3, are to be paid at National Living Wage/ National Minimum Wage, depending on the age of the apprentice. These rates are for the National Living Wage and the National Minimum Wage. The rates change every April.

Higher Level Apprenticeships, levels 4 to 7 (above A level), to be paid at 80% of the evaluated grade required for the job until the successful completion of the full apprenticeship.
