Service Update - Scam Alert

Trading Standards are receiving reports a Council Tax scam email and would like to remind residents that the Council will never contact you in this way.

The email advises that you are entitled to a Council Tax reduction and all you need to do is click to claim it. This is a scam and if you follow the process you will be giving your banking details to scammers who may use this to take money from your account.

Never click on links in emails like this, you don’t know who you are giving your details to and what they will do with them.


COVID-19 council tax payments update

There have been many misunderstandings about making payments for Council Tax, following the Coronavirus outbreak. Please see below some frequently asked questions (FAQ's) regarding Council Tax payments. The FAQ's will be updated if there any changes to how Council Tax payments should be made.


Does Council Tax still have to be paid at this time?

Yes, you should continue to pay as normal from 1st April. There has been no announcement from the Government that Council Tax payments have been frozen. The Isle of Wight Council understands that many people are impacted as a result of businesses closing and household income reducing at this very difficult time.


What can I do if I cannot afford to pay my instalments?

If you cannot afford to pay your instalment as a result of the outbreak you can request your instalments are extended into February and March. This option will extend your payments but does not reduce the total amount to be paid.

If you have difficulties meeting your instalments and extending your instalments will not assist in meeting your payments please use our online send a message to service form detailing your situation. Each enquiry will be considered individually.


Can I get a help to pay my Council Tax?

You may be entitled to help with Council Tax from the Local Council Tax Support Scheme.


What if I am unable to leave the house to pay?

If you usually make payments at a pay point or a post office you can pay by one of the following methods listed below. We request in these difficult times you help support the local authority’s ability to respond to this crisis and contact us online or use the self-service options available.

  • Direct Debit Payments are the easiest way to pay your Council Tax. We offer a choice of payment dates – 1st, 10th or 20th of the month or ½ yearly (2 instalments 1st April & 1st September). All payments are governed by the Direct Debit Guarantee. You can select one of the 3 methods, listed below to set up direct debit payments.

  • Internet payments with your debit card. Pay online with our 24-hour payment facility.

  • Online banking or set up a standing order using the following details:
    • Bank - Lloyds
    • Account Number - 14867260
    • Sort Code - 30-80-12
    • Please quote your 8 digit account reference number when making a payment online (please quote all numbers and letters but remove the hyphen).
  • 24 Hour automated telephone payment service. Please call 03450 450 076. You will need to have your council tax account number to hand when making the payment.

  • The Allpay app. Download the app from the following websites: App Store or Google Play. Use the 19 digit number from the bar code on the front of your council tax bill.
