The following information provided here is to help signpost you to the support opportunities available from the IW Council and external agencies.

Support from the Fostering team at the Isle of Wight Council

Learning Forum

We hold a lunchtime/evening training session for foster carers and social workers on a bi-monthly basis. This is an opportunity to meet with social workers, support workers and other carers to discuss general issues, fostering service news, or pressing topical or local matters. Move onto Adoption

We have designed this support group to help progress and support foster carers and their families through the process and best practice of moving the child to their new adoptive parents. These support groups are held regularly at County Hall, Newport. If you are interested in joining this support group please complete the online send a message to service form and we will contact you detailing when the next one is being held.

Children who Foster

We run these support groups for the children of the foster carers. It can have an impact on the whole family when a child in care is placed with them. Support is from our dedicated Foster Care team. For more information, please complete the online send a message to service form.

Men who Foster

Coming soon 2019…we are arranging a new support group specifically for male carers. This support group will provide the opportunity to discuss your journey and experience as a male foster carer, look out for more details.

Mentoring Scheme

In order to provide support to new carers through their assessment and into their initial stages of fostering, we are seeking to recruit experienced foster carers with time and a commitment to join our existing mentoring group. Those carers interested (either new or experienced) should approach their support/supervisory worker for more details. A yearly honorarium payment of £100 will be paid to each mentor.

Counselling Support

The Isle of Wight Council provides a counselling service for its staff and carers who have issues of a personal nature. Please discuss this with your support worker.
Alternatively you can use the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) which is available 24 hours a day, you can call anytime and will be able to speak with one of their helpline counsellors: 0800 276 1003.
