Self-Build Your House
Self-build is when you design, plan and build your own home. There are a number of ways you can do it. The level of involvement you have in building your home can vary depending on which way you choose. Some people will do the building work and labouring themselves, some will hire a contractor to do it for them. Self-builders may be individuals or part of a group.
The Self-build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015 places a responsibility on local authorities to keep a register of individuals and associations who are seeking to acquire serviced plots of land in their area in order to build homes for those individuals to occupy. Following the Act the Self-build and Custom Housebuilding (Register) Regulations 2016 give more information about what is required to be included on the Register and the processes involved. To view the Regulations, please click here (PDF, 159.46KB, 4 pages).
The Government has also published guidance, which is available on their Planning Practice Guidance portal website.
