Service Update - COVID-19

The Coroners office is currently closed to the public.

To remain covid safe this service is being delivered remotely. Currently no officers are working from the Seaclose Offices.

Due to these unprecedented times the Coroners Office workstreams have increased. It will take longer for a Coroners Officer to respond to any telephone messages.

H.M Coroner Isle of Wight

  • H.M Senior Coroner - Mrs Caroline Sumeray LL.B. (Hons), Dip FMS, Barrister.

 

The Coroner is assisted by a Senior Coroners Officer and three Coroners Officers.

Overview of the Coroner service

The Coroner investigates where there is:

  • Violent or unnatural deaths.

  • The cause of death is unknown.

  • Any death which may have occurred in custody or otherwise in state detention.  

 

Please note: Coroners are not employed by the Local Authority. However the Local Authority does fund the Coroner's service and all of the office staff are employed by the Isle of Wight Council.
