Commercial disposal of waste

All businesses have a legal duty of care to make sure their waste is disposed of safely, appropriately and legally, either by themselves or by a licensed waste carrier. More information is available on the  GOV.UK website.

Businesses that are contracted to carry somebody else’s waste must hold a valid Waste Carriers’ Licence.  All commercial users must have a valid Waste Carrier License to tip their waste or recycling.

To use the Commercial CWRC, traders must register as a waste carrier if transporting or disposing of business waste or operating a business that transports controlled waste. You need to register if you transport any kind of waste regularly as part of your business or some types of waste as a one-off.

You also need to register if you buy, sell or dispose of waste - or arrange for someone else to do so.

Traders must present their valid Waste Carrier Licence to staff at the CWRC before being permitted to dispose of their waste or recycling. The license is usually free. It is a legal requirement for any business that disposes of commercial waste to have a waste carrier license. Businesses can be fined up to £5,000 by the Environment Agency if they do not have a valid Waste Carriers Licence.
