Libraries Week 8 to 13 October 2018

The Islands libraries are participating fully in this year’s Libraries Week, a national celebration of public libraries, and the huge benefit we bring to people’s lives. This year’s Libraries Week emphasises our role in helping people improve their well being, bringing communities together, combating loneliness, providing a space for reading and creativity, and supporting people with their mental health. There will be a host of activities for all ages aimed at bringing people together, talking, having fun and learning new skills.

Monday 8 October Ryde Library 

10.30am – Rhymetime. Free event, songs and rhymes for babies and toddlers – stay afterwards to play and chat 

3.30pm – 4.30pm – Lego Special , 20 brick challenge 

Tuesday 9 October Sandown Library 

Sandown Library 10.00am-12.00pm. What your library can do for you – drop in and chat to staff about all the services and activities the library offers. Bring in your smartphones, tablets etc. and staff will get you started using our free online services including e-books and e-audio books. 

Freshwater Library 10.00am – 12.00pm. Knit and Natter a friendly group for all ages and stages. 

Cowes Library 11am Rhymetime. Free event, songs and rhymes for babies and toddlers – stay afterwards to play and chat 

Freshwater Library 2.00pm – 4.00pm. Scrabble - come along and join our friendly Scrabble Club! 

Ryde Library 2.00pm - 3.30pm. The History of Libraries on the Isle of Wightfree Tea and Talk by Richard Smout, IW Heritage Service Manager, concentrating on libraries on the Island before the dawn of public libraries. 

Sandown Library 2.00pm - 3.00pm, the Isle of Wight Library Service. Free event a short history and a talk about your Library Service, plus a chance to chat about your library memories afterwards with other library users. 

Sandown Library 3.30pm-5.00pm, Dancemakers. Free event gentle creative dance programme. It can help to improve balance, coordination, muscle strength, breathing, memory and confidence. 

Cowes Library 7.00pm – 9.00pm.  Drawing Course, If you like drawing or would love to learn, a fun and friendly weekly drawing course, with Local artist Bethany Moore, is being run at Cowes Library. Daytime and evening classes are being run. Each week, there are interesting things to draw, materials to try and guidance and tips through the sessions. You can try out different drawing mediums and be inspired by new and classic ideas. No classes will be run during the October half-term week. Costs are: £15 per session £60 for 5 sessions. Ventnor Library 2.00pm- 4.00pm, Woolly Knitters. A friendly knit and natter group 

Thursday 11 October

Cowes Library 2.00pm - 4.00pm, Drawing Course. If you like drawing or would love to learn, a fun and friendly weekly drawing course, with Local artist Bethany Moore, is being run at Cowes Library. Daytime and evening classes are being run. Each week, there are interesting things to draw, materials to try and guidance and tips through the sessions. Sandown Library 2.00pm -2.30pm free event. Rhyme time for babies and toddlers. 

Sandown Library 3.00pm- 4.00pm, Dance your socks off. Fabulous fitness for the over fifties! £5 per session. 

Lord Louis Library 2.00pm – 3.30pm free event. Colouring Group and friendly group for adults 

Lord Louis Library 6.00pm – 7.30pm. Read Vitalise Mental Health reading group a small friendly group helping to restore well being through reading.

Cowes Library 7 - 9pm – Philo Cafe. This is a monthly event, and provides thoughtful and lively discussion and an opportunity to talk about the way we and our communities, as well as society, national and international, deal with the challenges of modern life. Using the form of Socratic Method of careful listening and considered responses, the group follows the tradition of a critical philosophy as used by the Society for the Furtherance of Critical Philosophy. No knowledge of academic philosophy is needed as critical philosophy begins with the experience and wisdom of ordinary people Refreshments are available courtesy of the Supporters of Cowes Library Group, so just come along for an interesting and friendly evening, or for more information contact Cowes Library on 01893 293341 to topic for discussion. 

Friday 12 October

Lord Louis Library 10am and 11am, free event Rhymetime. Songs and rhymes for babies and toddlers – stay afterwards to play and chat. 

Cowes Library 10.30am - 12pm. Colouring Club for Adults Colouring Club for Adults takes place on the 2nd Friday of the month. This is a friendly group run by the Supporters of Cowes Library, and is a great relaxing activity, encouraging creativity and a good way to beat stress. All pens, pencils and colouring sheets are provided, but you can take your own. Refreshments are provided. 

Freshwater Library 10.30, free event. Rhymetime songs and rhymes for babies and toddlers – stay afterwards to play and chat.

Sandown Library, free event 1.30-3.30pm. Knit and natter come and knit and natter with us. 

Ventnor Library 2.00pm- 4.00pm. Time & Tide free Art and Heritage session, brought to you by Independent Arts, focusing on the life and works of Julia Margaret Cameron, and giving you the chance to have a go at sunprinting. 

Saturday 13 October

Ryde Library 9.00am – 5.00pm. National Poo Museum on Tour! Check out some stinky exhibits at the library! 

Sandown Library 10.30am -11.30am. Storytime for children library themed story with a make your own library kit craft. 

Sandown Library 10.00am-3.30pm. Readers advisory one to one sessions with Phil helping readers discover their new favourite author. Tell Phil books you have previously read and enjoyed and he’ll give you recommendations + plus 3 free book reservations over a cuppa and some cake.

Lord Louis Library 10am – 3pm . Open Day come along and find out about the different groups which meet in the library, see demonstrations and join in with the art group and colouring group. Refreshments available 11am – midday courtesy of the Friends of Lord Louis Library 

Ryde Library 10.30am – 11.30am. Poop-themed storytime, a free event tying in with the National Poo Museum exhibition 

Freshwater Library 10.30am – 11.30am . Ukulele concert by the library’s house band 

Lord Louis Library 1.00 – 3.00pm. Autumn Crafts drop in. Bring your children along for a free craft drop in – make a friendly mouse and its own cosy mouse burrow to take home 

Lord Louis Library 2.00pm – 3.00pm. Free Concert by WightUkers ukulele band. 

Ventnor Library 2.00pm - 3.00pm. Minecraft vs Lego battle of the builds, who can come up with the best library-themed build?
