Apprenticeships

What is an apprenticeship

young man and woman looking smart and successful

Apprenticeships are designed to be an opportunity for individuals to combine practical training in a job with study.

As an apprentice you’ll be:

  • Based in a workplace so that you can train to gain the skills in the occupation or service area of your choice.
  • Offered an apprenticeship agreement, which means you will learn and gain a qualification at a specific level over a given time.
  • Earning a wage and get holiday pay.

Myth buster: Apprenticeships are not meant to be an opportunity to employ somebody cheaply. An apprenticeship is a genuine opportunity for somebody to join the council to gain skills, knowledge and experience and achieve a qualification to help their employability for the future.

The benefits of you becoming an apprentice for the council are:

  • It Introduces new talent and gives the council fresh new ideas on how to become the organisation that future generations need, some of you may stay and grow if opportunities are available to help develop services.
  • Addresses skills shortages within services, through workplace learning making an apprentice a valuable asset to any team.
  • Apprentices tend to be flexible, motivated, eager and loyal to their employers.
  • Unlocking talent within our local community means we can utilise this talent to assist in the regeneration of the Isle of Wight by retaining skilled people.

Apprentice pay rates

The apprenticeship levy funds the costs of the training only. For those employees employed on an apprenticeship contract, the current rates of pay for intermediate and advanced level (levels 2&3) apprenticeships can be found in the table below.

Higher Level Apprenticeships, (level 4 and above), are paid at 80% of the evaluated grade required for the job until the successful completion of the full apprenticeship.

These rates are reviewed annually in line with national pay awards.
