Consultation on the proposed change of age-range at the Island Learning Centre, Newport, Isle of Wight

Start of consultation: 13 January 2023
End of consultation: 24 February 2023

The Isle of Wight Council is committed to a programme of improving inclusive provision across the school system. We aim to meet the needs of all children and young people effectively within their local schools on the Island.

The council would like to hear your views on plans to change the age range at the Island Learning Centre (ILC). We are proposing to change from 5 to 16 years to 11 to 16 years. This means removing the current primary provision.

The reason for this proposal is the introduction of a new Primary Behaviour Service (PBS) from September 2023. The PBS model would provide both outreach and inreach support for primary pupils with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs which manifest themselves in challenging or unproductive behaviour. An Island PBS service would follow the same approach as the PBS service from Hampshire County Council. PBS would cater for primary aged children who have been:

  • excluded
  • at risk of exclusion

The new Primary Behaviour Service (PBS) means the need to retain the primary provision at ILC is no longer needed.

Further details are provided in Consultation on the proposed change of age range at the Island Learning Centre - (iow.gov.uk)(PDF, 124KB, 4 pages).
