Exhumation
‘Exhumation’ means the removal from the ground of the remains of a human being, either in the form of a body or cremated remains.
The process of applying to have a body exhumed from a grave varies depending upon whether the grave lies within consecrated (usually church of England) or unconsecrated (non-denominational) ground.
You should bear in mind that exhumation is not a given. The applicant for exhumation needs to present a good case as to why an exhumation should be granted. It can be an expensive and lengthy process, as well as potentially upsetting.
It is preferred the family of the deceased/a personal representative petition for the exhumation, to the Ministry of Justice or to the Diocese Registry Office directly. We can offer advice and guidance if the exhumation relates to a council managed cemetery, or your preferred funeral director may be able to assist you.
If you would like to discuss an exhumation, contact us directly or call us to discuss your requirements.
