Report summary

Safety – 3 stars

Both of the Young Inspectors said that they were given good safety advice prior to the session.

They was told about the fire alarm and introduces to all the staff members and given a tour of the building and what they could do in the session. They said that they felt very safe in the building. There is a main door with a high bolt at the entrance so children cannot leave unattended and anyone entering must buzz to be let in. The outdoor areas are fenced off and there is a good staff presence in all areas to supervise.

The staff regularly checked in to ensure everyone was settled and were very friendly. The young inspectors both said they would like to come back and that they had a lovely time at Scallywags.

Fun and enjoyment – 3 stars

Both of the Young Inspectors really enjoyed the session. They had visited previously and found the session too loud and one of them brought his ear defenders with him which he said really helped although it was less noisy this time as there was more available space to use and the weather was good so some of the children were playing outside. The other young inspector was offered ear defenders and told to let someone know if it became too loud and she wanted to use them.

There was an excellent range of activities to choose from both inside and outside and the children can choose what they want to do and were supported by a member of staff in each area. The Chapel area was also in use with music, dancing and games taking place. There was a range of creative activities and one of them chose to make a stress ball. She also enjoyed the role play bakery and was supported to make her own Manager badge to wear. The other young inspector particularly liked the extensive range of superheroes, the computer and playing pool. They both chose not to have a snack but were offered this mid-morning.

Young Inspector Lead Feedback

Feedback from a Young Inspector aged 7 years:
“The staff were really friendly and helpful to me, if I could give them 5 stars I would have”

Accessibility – 3 stars

The Young Inspectors felt that the venue is accessible for a wheelchair user, but they may need to navigate any toys that were left on the floor. They both said that the start time of 9 am was ok but that some people may prefer to attend in the afternoon during school holidays as some children like to enjoy a lay in. They have asked if the next time they can attend an afternoon session to see what that is like. They felt it was very good value priced at £13 for the session.

What a parent said

Our children struggled the last time they visited but really enjoyed the session today, it has left them feeling much more positive and they cannot wait to return.

What the provider said

Thank you so much for visiting Scallywags it was lovely to see you again. We are really happy that your visit was a much more positive one. We are glad you liked the additional areas that were available.

We look forward to seeing you again and yes maybe try an afternoon session next time.

Take care from Sarah and the Scallywags team.

Suggested improvements

Provider to make parents aware of the Tuesday morning session which may not be suitable for children with auditory sensory needs. Provider to consider a safety sheet that can be sent out to new children or given upon arrival. This could include information about having ear defenders if needed or where to find a quiet place.
