Medina House School, Newport – enlargement

  1. Notice is hereby given, in accordance with Section 19(1) of the Education and Inspections Act 2006, that Isle of Wight Council intends to make a prescribed alteration to Medina House School, School Lane, Newport, PO30 2HS (category of school – community special school) by increasing the capacity of the school with effect from 1 January 2026.
  2. The current capacity of Medina House School is for 138 pupils aged 4-11 years olds with complex learning difficulties including autistic spectrum, physical disabilities, hearing and visual impairment, and social emotional mental health. The current number of pupils registered at the school is 138 and the proposed agreed place number will be 168 from 1 January 2026 with 30 places provided through a satellite provision located at the former Chillerton and Rookley Primary School site, Chillerton.
  3. These 30 additional places are required following the conclusion of a review of the sufficiency of school places, that identified an increase in the proportion of children with Social Emotional and Mental Health needs of primary school age requiring a specialist school place on the Island. The school places will be specific to this need and will not increase the capacity on the main school site.
