Improving education for children on the Isle of Wight

Do you want to make a difference to the lives of children and young people?

Would you enjoy working in one of the UK’s most beautiful locations?

Join our brand-new Educational Psychology department in Children’s Services at the Isle of Wight Council, we need qualified professionals like you to lead the way!

With skilled and ambitious Educational Psychologists on our team we can ensure children and young people across the island achieve their best outcomes and develop into independent, resilient adults.

This is an amazing opportunity to develop a service, with systems and structures that underpin a child and young person-centred approach.

You can be at the heart of creating something truly special.

Living and working on the Isle of Wight offers a unique work-life balance that is hard to beat. Whether you choose to relocate here permanently (relocation scheme of up to £8,000 available), or commute to our offices from the mainland, you’ll be able to take advantage of our wonderful island lifestyle while pursuing your own professional goals.

Commute by boat!

Getting to work on the Isle of Wight is easier than you might think, with quick, easy connections by boat to Southampton, Portsmouth, Southsea and Lymington, making it a unique and simple commute. Plus, with our generous staff travel discount on all ferry links, bus routes and a council run car pool scheme, a commute to the Island is plain sailing!

What a regular commuter says

"I’ve commuted to and from the Island for years, it’s much nicer than sitting in motorway traffic or standing on a crowded train every day. My crossing only takes 25 minutes, and I use that time to enjoy my morning coffee or relax with the views on my way home."

We are ready to embark on our own journey of development and growth and need enthusiastic, creative people to join us, to support our ethos of distributed leadership, helping our colleagues to be the best they can be.

As a new service we need to build our reputation and relationships with local schools and our colleagues across the council, working closely with colleagues in Youth Justice, Children's Social Care, Children Disability Team, Virtual School, Inclusion Support Service, Adult Social Care and Housing, Integrated Care Board/NHS, Public Health, plus many others.

Our service focus

  • trauma and attachment, not just awareness but actual practice in schools and across services
  • developing approaches and new provisions to support children and young people experiencing high anxiety and mental health
  • developing approaches to support emotional based school avoidance and understand the causes
  • understanding root causes of suspensions and exclusions, actively working to reduce these across the system
  • supporting children and young people with social, emotions and mental health (SEMH) as we create our SEMH provision
  • gathering the children and young people’s ‘voice’, using models such as the Lundy Model
  • engaging with our Elective Home Education community
  • support with the ‘Ordinarily Available Provision’ guidance, materials and practice within classrooms
