Here on the IOW, we are developing the Mental Health Social work team alongside health partners within an Island wide Mental Health Transformation Programme to deliver a collaborative and innovative community-based Mental Health and Wellbeing Service which empowers people by delivering the very best person-centred outcomes for those we serve. We are seeking to appoint a qualified Mental Health Senior Practitioner who will shape the practice of all aspects of mental health social work for daytime and out-of-hours provision with the support of the Team Manager. You will directly manage and supervise several of the team and report to the Team Manager.
Do you have experience of supervising, maybe as a Practice Educator or Mentor?
The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of the AMHP role, and the complexity of the work undertaken to achieve the best outcomes for people who are being assessed for detention under the Mental Health Act. You will undertake the day-to-day management of social work practice within the team, including the development of team members’ skills and service delivery to ensure a high quality of practice that promotes independence, recovery, choice and autonomy. And you will ensure the provision of high-quality assessment and support to people during a period of significant change, making certain that service delivery is Care Act compliant and customer care is at the centre of your and your team’s professional practice.
About the role:
We have a full time Senior Practitioner position available in our Isle of Wight Mental Health Team.
The team consists of 18 other staff members, including AMHP’s, qualified Social Workers, Social work assistants and an administrative officer. As a Senior Practitioner you will be overseeing the day-to-day operations and supervision of the adult social care staff in the Mental Health Team.
The team are on a journey of integration with our health colleagues with regular MDT Integration meetings and at some point, in the future we will be working towards being co-located with some of our health colleagues.
Our social care staff must be able to listen hard to the people of the Isle of Wight, to understand what really matters and to connect them to resources that help them continue with their chosen life, either with support or independently. The focus being on preventative rather than reactive practice.
You will also be working with staff supporting them to work with individuals to help them to regain control of their lives in a crisis or following an episode of mental ill health. To best support the people, we work with, we need Social Workers who are experienced in promoting their own and others professional curiosity, good risk assessment skills and who are competent in their knowledge of legislation and meeting their professional capabilities.

To join us, you must:
- Have a social work qualification and be currently registered with SW England.
- Be an accredited Practice Educator or AMHP
- Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment
- Have experience of chairing meetings
- Be able to demonstrate skills and experience of promoting a person centred and strengths-based approach
- Have an excellent working knowledge of legislation used within Adult Social Care in particular sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act & Mental Capacity Act.
- Have a good knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding, including s.42 Enquiries and Making Safeguarding Personal
- Be confident in decision making, whilst knowing when to seek support
- Understand the importance of data in supporting staff, teams, and wider service
- Have the passion to promote people’s strengths and the ability to make a difference in a safe working approach to social work practice
- Have proven ability to work as part of a team and capacity to lead a team that puts the strengths of individuals, families, and community at the heart of care and wellbeing.
- Be able to take part in the Out of Hours (OOH) stand-by duty rota as and when requested by management on an occasional basis.
