About domestic abuse

Domestic abuse is an incident or pattern of incidents or behaviour that can be any of the following:

  • controlling
  • coercive
  • threatening
  • degrading
  • violent

In most cases, domestic abuse is caused by a partner or ex-partner. It can also be caused by family members or carers.

Domestic abuse is widespread. It is important to know that domestic abuse can be experienced by adults and children of all genders.

Domestic Abuse Information

Domestic abuse can include, but is not limited to:

  • coercive control is a pattern of intimidation, degradation, isolation and control with the use or threat of physical or sexual violence
  • psychological and/or emotional abuse
  • physical or sexual violence and abuse
  • economic abuse
  • harassment and stalking
  • online or digital abuse

Children affected by domestic abuse are also victims. This is even if they were present during abusive incidents or not.

Controlling Behaviour Information

Controlling behaviour is when an abuser uses behaviours and tactics to make a person subordinate and/or dependent.

It includes

  • keeping them apart from friends, help and support
  • exploiting their resources and capacities for personal gain
  • taking advantage of their money and things they have - stopping their independence, resistance and escape
  • controlling their everyday behaviour
Coercive Behaviour Information

Coercive behaviour is defined as an act or a pattern of acts used to harm, punish, or frighten their victim.

It includes:

  • assault
  • threats
  • humiliation
  • intimidation
Economic Abuse Information

Economic abuse means any behaviour that may affect a person’s ability

  • to receive, use, or maintain money or other property
  • get goods or services

Honour-based abuse

Honour-based abuse is a form of domestic abuse often tied to cultural, religious, or familial expectations. It may involve physical violence, emotional abuse, or even threats to life. Individuals are pressured to conform to perceived standards of honour within their community.

Forced marriage

Forced marriage is when someone is made to marry without their consent. This is often under threat, coercion, or deception. This denies their autonomy and can lead to significant psychological and physical harm.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

FGM refers to procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to female genital organs for non-medical reasons. It’s a harmful practice that affects women and girls, causing long-term health problems and violating their rights.
