Scone and scams

The Isle of Wight Against Scams Partnership (IWASP) is linking up with Age UK for a scam awareness event on 3 October.

As part of the Celebrating Age festival (1 to 7 October), IWASP will be at Newport Library, Newport, between 1pm and 3pm for the ‘Tea and Technology, Scones and Scams’ event to provide advice on how to keep yourself safe from scams and doorstep crime.

Sally Ash, council fair trading officer, said: “I’m delighted that IWASP is taking part in this year’s Celebrating Age festival and we would love to see residents and be able to share advice, over a cup of tea and a slice of cake, on how to be scam aware.

“Falling victim to a scam can leave people feeling isolated, financially worse off and vulnerable to further scams. It can often feel overwhelming so we are here to say you are not alone and we can help.

“Please bring your mobile phone or tablet with you and IWASP will be able to show how you can protect yourselves technologically. If you have any letters or emails that you would like IWASP to look at and advise on or you have fallen prey to a scam, we will do our best to help.”

Visitors on the day will also have the chance to take part in a short session designed to keep you and those you care about safe from scams. Free refreshments will also be available on the day.

Representatives from Age UK will also be available on the day, to provide information and advice.

Please note the venue for the event is Newport Library NOT Jubilee Stores, as has been advertised previously.
