Held last month at the West Wight Sports and Community Centre, Freshwater, around 500 youngsters took part in a variety of sporting activities including boccia, archery and handball.

Launched by the Isle of Wight Council’s Public Health Team in collaboration with Premier School Sport Coaching, the games marked a successful continuation for the Partnership Education Attainment and Children’s Health (PEACH) programme.

PEACH was created to better support schools in improving the health and wellbeing of their pupils, staff and families through physical activity, healthy eating, PSHE and emotional wellbeing and mental health.

Councillor Karl Love, Cabinet member for Public Health, said: "The PEACH Games are important to promote physical activity, positive wellbeing, and healthy competition.

"This in turn encourages young people to lead healthier lifestyles, which include plenty of exercise and a good diet."

There was great feedback from organisers and schools with particular praise for sport leaders from Carisbrooke, Medina and the Isle of Wight College, who ensured the event ran smoothly and provided inspiration and leadership.

Councillor Debbie Andre, Cabinet member for children's services, added: " I was delighted to attend and see first-hand the fun that the children were having, while improving their overall fitness, enjoying a wide range of alternative sports, such as boccia, designed to involve those children who don’t readily engage in more traditional sports.

"Well done to all those who took part and a big thank you to Premier School Sport Coaching, West Wight Sports Centre, Wight First Aid, Southern Vectis, AMP Hire, our sports leaders and our primary schools for supporting this fantastic event."
