Island libraries are gearing up to mark the National Year of Reading 2026 with the return of their popular Book Bingo challenge — encouraging readers of all ages to rediscover the simple pleasure of getting lost in a good book.

The year long, UK wide campaign aims to help more people “go all in” on reading, at a time when busy lifestyles and digital distractions have caused a decline in reading for pleasure.

Island librarians hope that Book Bingo will give residents a light hearted, friendly nudge to try something new.

From 2 February, Brighstone, Freshwater, Lord Louis, Sandown, Shanklin, Ryde and Ventnor libraries will all be inviting visitors to sign up for the 2026 Book Bingo challenge, with each branch offering a £50 book token in a prize draw at the end of the year.

Participants will receive a special Book Bingo Card, featuring 25 scratch off squares, each hiding a surprise reading challenge.

Readers won't know what they’ve signed up for until they scratch the panel, but library staff will be on hand to help find the perfect book to match.

Development librarian, Louise Emery, said the challenge always brings a real buzz to the libraries.

She said: “People love the surprise element — it sparks so many brilliant conversations between readers and staff. Every year we hear from people who tell us they’ve picked up books they never would have chosen, and ended up absolutely loving them.”

Anyone who completes all 25 challenges before December will be entered into their library’s draw to win a book token, generously funded by Friends of the Library groups. With seven participating branches, that means seven chances to win.

Younger readers can also join the fun. A children’s version of Book Bingo launched late last year, ensuring the whole family can take part together.
