Clear out and care — Islanders urged to return unused equipment
Published: 5 November 2025
Island residents are being invited to clear out their cupboards and help others in need through a new community equipment return amnesty.
The Isle of Wight Council is calling on people to return items such as crutches, wheelchairs, walking frames and other borrowed equipment that may be gathering dust at home.
Returned items will be cleaned, refurbished and made available to those who need them most.
Danielle Marriott, Community Equipment Store operational lead, said: “Every piece of equipment returned helps someone regain independence and confidence. It’s a simple act that can make a huge difference.
“We know many people keep items just in case, but if you no longer need them, please bring them back. Together, we can make sure these resources reach those who really need them.
"This initiative isn’t just about decluttering, it’s about sustainability and supporting our community. By returning equipment, you’re helping us reduce waste and provide vital support where it matters most.”
Why return community equipment?
- Give back to the community: Your used equipment can help individuals recovering from surgery, injuries, or chronic conditions regain independence.
- Reduce waste and save money: Reusing equipment is kinder to the environment and frees up much needed resources for providing new equipment or other vital support services. In 2024–25 alone, 1,507 walking frames were returned, saving the council and health an incredible £34,648 by avoiding unnecessary purchases!
- Declutter your home: Let go of unused items and make space for what truly matters.
A wide variety of equipment can be returned, including:
- walking frames or sticks;
- crutches;
- bath lifts;shower seats, commodes, and toilet surrounds;
- furniture raisers.
Anyone with equipment to return can drop it off at either the Community Equipment Store, 19 Barry Way, Newport, PO30 5GY, Monday to Friday, 9am to 3.30pm, or St Mary's Hospital, either at the main reception or physio department, where there are large blue donation bins for returned equipment to be placed in.
