Council chair takes on fiery charity challenge

After spinning tracks at the recent DECADeANCE charity fundraiser, Councillor Ian Dore is swapping the DJ box for something a little hotter — quite literally!
On Saturday, 8 November, the Isle of Wight Steam Railway at Havenstreet will be the venue for a spectacular fire walk challenge, and the council Chair is ready to go barefoot in aid of the RSPCA Isle of Wight.
Running from 4pm to 7pm, the event invites Islanders to walk barefoot across red-hot embers to help raise vital funds for animals in need.
“I first did one of these in Eastbourne years ago while hosting a breakfast radio show,” said Councillor Dore.
“I’ve always wanted to do another, and here’s not only my chance, but yours too. A fire walk is more than an adrenaline rush; it’s about overcoming fear and proving to yourself that you can achieve things you never thought possible.
"The feeling of stepping across the heat is unforgettable.”
The challenge is no illusion — the embers can reach temperatures of 1,200°F. But don’t worry, expert trainers will guide participants through a safety briefing before the walk begins at 5pm.
No special fitness or preparation is required, just clean feet, comfortable clothes, and a dash of courage.
The event supports RSPCA Isle of Wight, an independent charity that runs the animal centre at Godshill, caring for dogs, cats, small animals, and wildlife with many rescued from cruelty and neglect.
With no government funding and only five per cent of income from the national RSPCA, local fundraising is essential.
Ian added: “I’ve had three cats from the local RSPCA in Godshill. I’m sure many Islanders have too. This is a great way to give something back while having an unforgettable experience.
"The atmosphere at these events is hugely positive with everyone cheering each other on, knowing they’re making a real difference.”
Whether you’re looking for a personal challenge, a unique way to support animal welfare, or simply a memorable day out, the RSPCA Isle of Wight Fire Walk Challenge promises to be daring, meaningful, and heart-warming.
