Island groups invited to apply for grants to support local families
Published: 3 November 2025
Local groups, clubs and community enterprises on the Isle of Wight are being invited to apply for grants of up to £5,000 to help launch new activities aimed at supporting families, babies, children and carers.
The funding is part of the Isle of Wight Council’s Community Capacity Grant scheme, supported by children's services.
The initiative is designed to strengthen grassroots support for babies, children, young people, parents and carers by encouraging the creation of inclusive and engaging activities.
Last year, ten new projects were awarded funding, including a skateboarding group in Ventnor set up by Sun Drum CIC in collaboration with local skateboarding coach John Cattle.
The group has proved popular with young people in the area, with one participant saying: “Skate club makes me feel brave because I can try things I never thought I could do.”
Another standout project was the Isle of Wight Film School, which used its grant to launch creative workshops for young people interested in filmmaking and digital storytelling.
Laura Laurenson, director, said: "My involvement with the Community Capacity Grants and collaboration with Teresa has provided an excellent foundation for developing a community-focused business, I would highly recommend getting involved."
The initiative gave participants hands-on experience with cameras, editing software and production techniques, helping them build confidence and skills in a supportive environment.
This year, the council is particularly keen to support projects that focus on:
- Activities, clubs or groups for children aged five and over
- Youth work, especially around the transition from Year 6 to Year 7
- Family wellbeing sessions
- Support for young carers
- Perinatal mental health activities for parents and carers, both pre- and post-birth
Councillor Paul Brading, chair of the children's services, education and skills committee, said: “These grants have already helped bring some truly inspiring ideas to life, giving families across the Island new ways to connect, grow and thrive.
"We’re excited to see what this next round of funding will unlock, and we’re here to support anyone with a vision for making a difference in their community.”
Applications must be submitted by 12 noon on 21 November 2025.
To help potential applicants, the council is hosting two face-to-face support sessions at County Hall:
- Saturday, 8 November, from 1pm to 3pm
- Wednesday, 12 November, from 5pm to 7pm
Anyone interested in attending is encouraged to book a place by emailing earlyhelpgrant@iow.gov.uk or calling (01983) 823169.
