Island museums serve up half term fun for families
Published: 8 October 2025
Families across the Isle of Wight are in for a treat this October half term, with a host of hands-on history and creative activities on offer at two of the Island’s much-loved museums.
Organised by the Isle of Wight Council’s Heritage Service, the activities are designed to spark curiosity and offer something a bit different for children and grown-ups alike — all for just £1 per person.
Although Dinosaur Isle in Sandown is temporarily closed for essential maintenance, dino enthusiasts needn’t worry.
The museum is going mobile with a special Dinosaur Isle on the Road event at the Museum of Island History in Newport.
Taking place on Tuesday 28 and Thursday 30 October, from 10am to 2pm, visitors can explore the prehistoric creatures that once roamed the Island, handle genuine local fossils, and get crafty by building their own dinosaur diorama.
A pop-up dinosaur-themed shop will also be on site, offering gifts and souvenirs.
Meanwhile, at Newport Roman Villa, families can enjoy Clay Days on Wednesday 22 and 29 October, also from 10am to 2pm.
Inspired by Roman household shrines and offerings to the gods, these sessions invite visitors to explore the villa’s ancient ruins and ponder whether a feature in the dining room is a fireplace or perhaps a shrine, as recently suggested by Roman experts.
A picture trail of Roman gods and goddesses will guide visitors through the site, culminating in the chance to sculpt their own shrine or offering from clay.
Dr Rachel Tait, museum curator for the Isle of Wight Council Heritage Service, said: "We’re delighted to offer these fun and educational activities for families during the half term.
"Whether you're fascinated by dinosaurs or intrigued by Roman life, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. It’s a great opportunity to explore the Island’s rich heritage in a hands-on way."
No booking is required for either event, and all activities are included in the entry fee.
