Hundreds gathered in St Thomas’ Square, Newport, on Sunday for the County Remembrance Service and Parade, united in honouring those who served and sacrificed for our freedom.
The event, organised by the Isle of Wight Council’s Civic Office in partnership with the Royal British Legion and local churches, was marked by dignity and respect.
Veterans stood shoulder to shoulder with reservists, emergency services, youth groups, cadets, and families, creating a powerful atmosphere that reflected the true meaning of remembrance.
The service opened with prayers led by Rev Chris Bradish, followed by the traditional Act of Remembrance.
Cadet Seb Drake read the Exhortation before Abbie Cook sounded the Last Post on a historic bugle once used by the Isle of Wight Rifles more than a century ago.
Seb’s father, LCpl Mat Drake, delivered the Kohima Epitaph, adding a poignant family connection to the proceedings.
The Vectis Corps of Drums Marching Band provided a stirring backdrop as wreaths were laid, with Elgar’s Nimrod echoing through the square.
Abby Lynch, Curate of Newport and Carisbrooke, gave a Bible reading and led the hymn Abide With Me. The Chair of the council, Councillor Ian Dore, himself a veteran, delivered a heartfelt address, capturing the depth of collective gratitude shared by all present.
Following the service, Parade Marshal Simon Tutton formed up the procession, led out by the Royal British Legion Riders.
The Vectis Marching Band set the pace as the parade made its way along the High Street, a striking sight of young cadets marching alongside seasoned veterans and emergency services personnel.
A formal salute was given to the Vice Lord-Lieutenant before the parade returned to St Thomas’ Square for a final tribute at the war memorial.
