The Isle of Wight Council has been recognised for its outstanding efforts to reduce its environmental impact and promote sustainability.

The Council achieved a Gold award in the Green Impact scheme for its commitment to sustainability. Specifically, for their efforts at their County Hall and Sea Street office, while also securing a Bronze award for Building 41.

The Green Impact program encourages environmentally and socially sustainable practices within organisations, and it’s heartening to see the council’s dedication to making positive changes in their workplaces.

The national scheme supports businesses across the island to become more eco-friendly, ethical and environmentally aware. The council was one of 12 businesses that received Green Impact awards this year.

The Green Impact scheme provides a toolkit with over 190 actions that businesses can choose from to improve their environmental performance and reduce operational costs. The actions are worth different points, ranging from 2 to 30, and there are four award levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Councillor Lora Peacey-Wilcox, Cabinet member for climate change, biosphere and waste, said: “We are delighted to receive this Gold and Bronze award, which reflects our commitment to making the Isle of Wight a cleaner, greener and more attractive place to live, work and do business.

"I want to personally say thank you to all the dedicated staff at the Isle of Wight Council who were involved and for their efforts. They have worked hard to implement simple actions that make a positive difference. We would like to encourage other businesses to join this free scheme and benefit from it.”

Natasha Dix, the Service Director for Waste Environment and Planning, stated, "We have supported the initiative by aligning it with the Isle of Wight Council Climate and Environment Strategy 2021-2040, which outlines our long-term vision for environmental sustainability.

"Through the implementation of these tangible actions in our office buildings, the council can contribute significantly to a positive impact on our environment and our community.

“Local businesses seeking more information about the Green Impact scheme and how to participate can find details on their website.”

The Green Impact scheme is a collaborative initiative offered by Students Organising for Sustainability UK (SOS-UK). This national program empowers organisations, universities, colleges, community institutions, and students’ unions nationwide to create more sustainable work environments.
