Libraries mark Jane Austen anniversary with Regency flair

Isle of Wight libraries have brought their year-long celebration of Jane Austen’s 250th anniversary to a close with two memorable events that delighted fans of the beloved author.
On Sunday, 23 November, Lord Louis Library played host to the Hampshire Regency Dancers, a Winchester-based group dedicated to preserving the dances of the Regency era.
The troupe led an engaging demonstration and workshop, teaching attendees several traditional dances, including the intriguingly named Mr Beveridge’s Maggot and The Duke of Kent.
With around 30 enthusiastic novices taking part, the atmosphere was lively and full of laughter. Many participants were quick to request a return visit in 2026.
The festivities continued at Ryde Library, where guests enjoyed a charming Regency tea party.
Helen Howe, from the Hampshire branch of the Jane Austen Society, gave an insightful talk on “Jane Austen at Christmas,” exploring festive traditions and games of the period.
Visitors then sampled authentic treats such as rout cakes, spiced biscuits, and pound cake, while library staff added to the fun with a Jane Austen quiz and bingo.
Louise Emery, development librarian, said: “It’s been wonderful to see so many people come together to celebrate Jane Austen’s life and works.
"These events have captured the spirit of the Regency era and shown how libraries can bring history to life for our community.
"Both Lord Louis and Ryde libraries would like to extend their thanks to their Friends of the Library who raise funds and volunteer their time to make events like this possible."
