Popular seawall footpath reopens

The promenade at Totland Bay, linking the Waterfront Restaurant and Widdick Chine has now reopened, just in time for those Christmas and New Years Day walks.

The footpath was originally closed for safety, due to some substantial voids in the sea defence structure.

Repairs have now been carried out. This work was completed at significant cost to the owner of the promenade with a contribution being made by the Isle of Wight Council’s Rights of Way Service to reflect the public benefit and surface repairs.

Michelle Love, service director for highways and community protection, said: ‘’The council wishes to thank the landowner, Marine Leisure, for the repairs which will enable the public to safely walk along and enjoy the promenade over the Christmas holiday period and beyond.

"We would also like to give a special mention to The Waterfront Restaurant, Shoreline Conservation Ltd and Steve Evans for instigating and carrying out these works respectively.

"We would like to remind those walking along coastal environments to always be vigilant and take care, especially during adverse weather conditions.’’

Councillor Chris Jarman, ward councillor for Totland and Colwell, added: ‘’The reopening of the footpath is great news for anyone wanting to explore this beautiful side of the Island.

"Thank you to everyone involved for their hard work, time and money to help ensure this wonderful walking route is open. Residents and visitors will all look forward to getting out and enjoying some fresh air over Christmas and New Year.’’
