The Isle of Wight Council is once again backing National Recycle Week, encouraging residents to do their bit for the environment.

Now in its 22nd year, Recycle Week runs from 22 to 28 September and celebrates the positive steps taken by individuals and communities across the UK to recycle more and waste less.

Led by Recycle Now, this flagship annual campaign aims to inspire people to recycle more of the right things, more often.

This year’s campaign continues the ‘Rescue Me! Recycle’ theme from last year, reminding us that many of the items we throw away still have a chance at a second life.

From empty aerosols to tin cans, paper, plastic bottles and glass, every item we recycle is one less in landfill and one more step towards a sustainable future.

On the Isle of Wight, we can play a key role by recycling the household items we use every day.  Dry recyclables such as plastic, metal, paper, and glass are collected from kerbsides and sorted at the Forest Park Mechanical Treatment Plant.

Natasha Dix, director for waste, environment and planning, said: “We are definitely an island of recyclers.

"Our busy lives are full of things we could and should reuse and recycle. So, whether you reuse and recycle what you can this Recycle Week, let’s keep an eye out for the things we could rescue from the general waste.

“We can all do our bit — let’s Rescue more, Recycle more.”

Recycle Week was launched in 2003 to promote sustainable recycling habits and reduce environmental impact.

Over two decades later, it remains a key national campaign, encouraging individuals, communities, and businesses to come together in support of a greener future.
