About home to school transport

The Transport team has the responsibility for the procurement and management of home to school transport for around 4,000 students.

The majority of these students travel on the dedicated contracted home to school bus and coach services. Some students travel by the network of public bus or rail services whilst some travel by taxi due to their needs or geographical location.

For contracted school bus services operating to Medina House and St George's special schools, specialist safety seating is available and highly trained Passenger Escorts travel on the bus service in order to meet the needs of individual students.

All drivers and Passenger Escorts must hold an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Application process

There are no priority/catchment areas for primary and secondary schools. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to apply for the school nearest to their home address. View the online map to find the nearest school.

A pupils nearest school is calculated by direct distance. This is a straight line from the centre of the home address to the centre of the school. This is calculated using the local authority’s geographical information system (GIS). Home to School Transport is assessed on whether they are attending their nearest school (direct distance or walking route) and whether the shortest walking route is over the qualifying distance. For further information on qualifying distances, download or print off the Home to School Transport Policy (PDF, 0.2MB, 13 pages).
