In-year transfer to Isle of Wight schools

What is the process for in-year transfer to Isle of Wight schools?

Admissions for Community and Voluntary Controlled schools

The local authority manages admissions for all Community and Voluntary Controlled schools.

The following schools are their own admissions authority who co-ordinate and administer their own in-year admissions.

If you would like to make an application to transfer in-year to one of these schools, you need to apply directly to the school.

Which schools have in-year admissions coordinated by the local authority?

The following schools are their own admissions authorities and are responsible their own admissions, but the local authority administer their in-year applications.

The local authority maintain waiting lists for some of the schools listed. If your child is on a waiting list, we can give you updates for the schools we administer, indicated below.

  • Applications are processed in the order they are received
  • For Community or Voluntary Controlled schools the local authority is the admissions authority and will process the application in line with the admissions policy
  • For schools who are their own admissions authority and for whom the local authority administer their applications, your application is sent securely to the school for processing in line with their admissions policy. The school will respond within 5 school days and we will communicate this to you. If a response is not received we will contact them.
  • The local authority aims to send you a written outcome within 10 school days (maximum 15 days), as required by the School Admissions Code, for all applications that we process

Important - additional information

  • If a school is their own admission authority, and you apply just before or during a school holiday, that school may not respond until they reopen.

What else do I need to know?

  • The Isle of Wight does not have catchment or priority area schools. Apply to the school nearest your home.
  • Find your nearest school using the Schools Map
  • Read the Home to School Transport Policy before applying, especially if you choose a school that is not the closest to your home.
  • If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), email: EHCP.General@iow.gov.uk. The SEND Team will help you update the school named in the plan.
  • If you are moving to the island, apply once you have confirmation of your island address. Please use this address when submitting your application, as we are unable to process your application without confirmation of your island address.
