Council services changes

The Isle of Wight Council is continuing to urgently review and adjust its activities to maintain critical services to Island residents in line with the ongoing updates from the government in relation to COVID-19 (coronavirus).

As of Wednesday 18 March 2020 a number of key changes have taken place, this means that we’ve had to temporarily close or change the way we provide some of  the Isle of Wight Council services. 

We apologise for any inconvenience that may cause, but feel it is essential to help to protect our community and minimise unnecessary travel and social contact during this time.

Many of our services are available online - please save time and go online if you can.

Bereavement Services


Contact Bereavement services

The crematorium and grounds will now be closed to members of the public not attending funerals from midnight, Friday 27 March. This closure may also be extended to all other cemeteries and burial grounds in the near future.

All cremation documentation, burial forms and music should be delivered at least three clear office working days prior to each service, especially over this period.

Services from Tuesday 24 March 2020
  • The numbers of people within the service will be restricted to close family only and limited to 10
  • All family attending in their own transport should be encouraged to wait within their vehicles until the funeral cortege arrives
  • Ministers/ Celebrants or your funeral director will need to manage any musical requirements directly themselves
  • Windows weather permitting will remain open to enable a steady supply of fresh air
  • Witness Scattering of ashes is suspended until further notice
  • Weekend opening will be suspended until further notice


  • Our administration offices will be closed to the public. All enquiries can be made via the telephone 01983 882288
  • Families can collect their loved ones ashes, please telephone to arrange a specific time
  • Memorial applications should be sent via the post and any advice/ instruction to made via Email or conveyed over the phone
  • All burial business, purchase of graves, memorial applications, etc. to sent via email, post and any advice /instruction to by conveyed over the phone

Pensions Administration


The Pensions Administration Team will be delivering their full service, albeit from different locations. There will be no disruption to the payment of monthly pensions in respect of the Local Government Pension Scheme or the Firefighters Pension Schemes.

We will be prioritising queries from members in receipt of a pension from us, members that are about to retire and relatives that have recently lost a loved one.

We will answer any other non-urgent queries  as soon as we are able.

Recycling and waste collections


All recycling and waste collections continue to operate as usual.

Please remember to set out your wheeled bins/gull-proof sacks and food waste by 7am on the correct day of your collection or they will not be collected.

If your household is self-isolating you will need to follow guidance for Cleaning and Disposal of Waste:

Use your usual household product, like detergents and bleach. Clean frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, handrails, remote controls and table tops.

Place cleaning product plastic bottles & nozzles in the recycling.

Place used kitchen towel, tissues and wipes in the General Waste.

Wash tea towels and cleaning clothes appropriately.

Personal waste such as tissues and disposable cleaning clothes must be placed in the general waste.

During your period of self-isolation please place waste and recycling in plastic bags, tie these and then place in a second bag and tie again (Double bagging)

Do not place your waste out for collection for 72 hours after it has been double bagged.

If you or a member of your household receives a positive COVID-19 result you will be provided with guidance on waste by your healthcare provider. Do not place your waste out for regular collection.

·        Customers can now make a claim for child benefit or universal credit prior to the birth being registered

·        All ceremonies are deferred. We are awaiting government guidance.


Marriage/Civil Partnership

·        No longer taking place

·        Notices of marriage and civil partnership are now deferred until we are through the current pandemic period

·        Provisional bookings are to be held on a waiting list until the service resumes business as usual



Registrars are now registering deaths by telephone. Appointments to register can be booked by calling 823233 option 1.


Funeral paperwork will be emailed directly to the relevant agencies.

For stop smoking and weight management services. Self-referrals can be made for stop smoking through the normal route, contact us by phone or email. We will get back to you within 5 working days. Referrals for weight management must be made by a health professional or Jobcentre+/DWP. Due to COVID-19 all face-to-face clinics will now transfer to telephone support until further notice. All patients new and existing will be offered this support.
