Site Rules

Entry to Recycling Centres by pre-booked appointment only

Please stay safe and stay home - you must only book an appointment at the Recycling Centre if it is essential to do so. Please only travel to re-opened HWRCs if it is essential and if your waste is posing a risk to your health, the local environment or a risk of injury.

Please read all updated information before booking your appointment:

  • Due to social distancing the Recycling Centres will open via a booking system for vehicles.
  • You must have a booking reference number for your appointment to visit either Lynnbottom or Afton Marsh Household Recycling Centres.
  • You will be sent an email with the booking reference number on when you apply for your appointment.
  • The booking reference will start with iw.
  • Bookings may only be made once every 14 days per household.
  • If you arrive without a reference number you will be turned away from the recycling centre.
  • Do not come to the Recycling Centre if you have symptoms or are confirmed to have COVID-19.

If you no longer need your booked appointment please email waste.contract@iow.gov.uk so that we can release the booking.

Recycling and waste you may bring:

Please ensure you have sorted you recycling before arrival. Only the following items may be brought to the Recycling Centres:

  • Bicycles;
  • bonded asbestos;(permit required) 
  • cans;
  • car batteries;
  • card;
  • cooking oil;
  • DIY waste;
  • engine oil;
  • food waste;
  • fluorescent tubes and CFL's;
  • fridges, freezers, dishwashers and cookers (you must be able to unload unassisted);
  • furniture for reuse;
  • gas bottles;
  • glass;
  • green waste;
  • household and hazardous chemicals;
  • household batteries;
  • household furnishings and bric a brac;
  • mattresses
  • metals (ferrous and non-ferrous);
  • paint;
  • paper;
  • plasterboard;(permit required) 
  • plastics;
  • rubble and inert waste;
  • soil;
  • tetrapaks;
  • textiles;
  • tyres excluding agricultural;
  • WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment); and
  • wood.

Recycling items that will not currently be accepted on site are:

  • General waste for example waste you would normally place in your black bin or sacks.

Please continue to set this waste out for your fortnightly general waste collection within your bin or sack. Excess waste on General Waste Week will not be taken. General Waste will be phased in over the coming weeks.

Reduce, reuse, recycle

  • Maximise your recycling at the kerbside to reduce your general waste.
  • Before disposing of household items look to find a reuse for them or book a free reuse collection for reusable items.
  • Recycle everything you can at the kerbside to reduce non-essential journeys, all excess recycling will be taken.

 

Social Distancing Measures within the Recycling Centres

The following must be undertaken when visiting the recycling centres:

  • Have a valid booking reference;
  • wait to be directed to a parking bay by our staff;
  • park in allocated bay only;
  • wear appropriate clothing for the activity. For example please wear flat close toed shoes, long sleeves, gloves if needed;
  • only 2 adults per vehicle may exit and unload (no persons under 16 may exit vehicles);
  • always remain 2 metres from each other and staff;
  • do not attend site if they have symptoms of COVID-19; 
  • follow safe walking routes;
  • only use open bays/skips as directed by staff;
  • staff will not assist with unloading (unless all vehicle occupants over 16 are disabled);
  • staff will not unload on behalf of householders;
  • first aid on site will be limited due to social distancing, staff have a right to refuse first aid if they believe it will put them at risk;
  • verbal and physical abuse will not be tolerated and may result in a ban from site. Staff will be wearing body cameras and will refer verbal and physical abuse to the police.

 

How to Make a Booking

  • Booking Slots will be made available online up to four weeks in advance.
  • Booking Slots are in 30-minute windows. Do not arrive before your allotted time.
  • Bookings must be made at least 24 hours before visiting.
  • You must bring your booking reference number it will begin with iw you will be turned away from the recycling centre without it.

Recycling centres opening times

Afton Marsh:

  • Monday, Saturday and Sunday.
  • 30-minute slots from 10am to 5pm.

Lynnbottom:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
  • 30 minute slots from 10am to 5pm.
