Join the Independent Remuneration Panel

Are you interested in local democracy? Are you interested in the community? Do you think local councillors do a good job?

The Isle of Wight Council needs independent members of the public to be members of the Independent Remuneration Panel which advises the Council on the remuneration and allowances to be paid to the Isle of Wight Council elected members.

Periodically we have to review our scheme of allowances and payments to elected and other members, and to do this we seek the views of an Independent Remuneration Panel. The panel, although supported by the officers of the Isle of Wight Council, is entirely independent of the elected members of the council. It considers evidence and views on the payments to elected members and makes recommendations to the Council. We are looking for people to join the panel for up to four years from May 2021.

There is a statutory requirement for full council to agree the members allowances scheme on an annual basis. The work of the panel can fluctuate, as the panel may be required periodically to undertake a review of the allowances paid to councillors. Meetings of the panel involves about 16 hours of work in total, spread over a 6 to 8 week period. In some years the amount of time may be greater or less than that.

An allowance of £301 along with reasonable expenses, will be paid for years in which the panel is required to undertake a review. The work is usually undertaken at meetings, including remotely but with some consideration of reports and ideas electronically.

Successful candidates will be independent from the council and any political parties and will work with the rest of the panel members either in meetings, electronically or by any such method as is appropriate. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by a small panel of elected members in late January 2021

For an informal discussion please contact Chris Potter, Assistant Director for Corporate Services and Monitoring Officer on (01983) 821000 or email christopher.potter@iow.gov.uk.

If you are interested in the position please request an application pack and return by 4.30 pm on 22 January 2021.
