The request comes following Isle of Wight Council's recent road safety campaign.

Natasha Dix, the council’s strategic manager for environment, said: “This Christmas, we’re asking residents to help keep our collection crew safe when carrying out their job on the Island’s roads.

“They work in many locations across the Isle of Wight at the same time. Winter poses its own challenges for our waste and recycling teams, when it’s darker and weather conditions are more unpredictable.”

You can help look after your crew by:
  • putting your bin/sacks are out from 7am on your day of collection on the kerbside;
  • checking your property front is clear of trip hazards. Darker mornings and evenings mean less visibility for the crews on foot;
  • making sure overhanging trees/bushes are cut back to allow collection vehicles to pass safely;
  • being patient if there is a collection vehicle in front of you. Reduced visibility may mean you do not see on-coming traffic or collection crews on foot working around the vehicle.
Councillor Karen Lucioni, Cabinet lead for waste and recycling, said: “Our collection crews, who are Islanders themselves, understand the danger posed when working on the roads, especially during the current dark mornings and nights.

“The safety of those working on the roads, other road users as well as pedestrians is always a top priority. Everyone should return home safely from work after their shift and everyone has a part to play in ensuring the safety of others and making this happen."
